Neighborhood Spotlight: Rancharrah, Reno NV
Some neighborhoods are built around homes. Rancharrah was built around a story.
What was once the private Reno estate of casino legend Bill Harrah has been reimagined into one of the city's most interesting places to live, bringing together luxury homes, a private social club, restaurants, boutiques, wellness, and pieces of old Reno history in one beautifully designed community.
And somehow, despite being right in the middle of Reno, it feels like its own little world.
From Private Estate to Reno Neighborhood
Rancharrah's story dates back to 1957, when Bill Harrah purchased the property and created his private family estate.
This wasn't exactly your average Reno ranch.
Over the years, guests included names like Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, Debbie Reynolds, and Steve Martin. Harrah's famous automobile collection was part of the estate's story, along with a private lake, golf course, and sprawling grounds.
Today, much of that history has been woven into a completely new version of Rancharrah.
Instead of erasing what was here before, the community kept pieces of the original estate and built around them, giving Rancharrah a sense of place that would be nearly impossible to recreate from scratch.
The Homes at Rancharrah
Rancharrah isn't one single style of neighborhood.
The residential community is divided into seven villages with approximately 375 homes, ranging from large custom homesites to semi-custom residences and villas.
That creates quite a bit of variety.
Someone looking for a substantial custom property can have a very different experience here from someone drawn to a lower-maintenance, lock-and-leave home. Contemporary architecture sits alongside more traditional designs, while walking paths and landscaped common areas connect the different parts of the community.
But one of the most interesting things about living at Rancharrah is everything that exists beyond your front door.
The Club at Rancharrah
At the center of the community is The Club at Rancharrah, housed within the former Harrah family mansion.
The approximately 40,000-square-foot private social club gives members a place to dine, work out, relax, and gather without leaving the community.
There's a three-level fitness center, resort-style pool, pickleball and bocce courts, spa and nail salon, outdoor gathering spaces, and a full calendar of social events.
Members can meet for dinner or drinks at Nineteen 57 Restaurant & Bar, named for the year Bill Harrah purchased the original estate, or spend an afternoon enjoying the pool and grounds.
The original estate setting gives the Club a character that's difficult to reproduce in a newly built clubhouse. It feels connected to Rancharrah's past while serving as a completely modern gathering place.
The Village at Rancharrah
And then there's The Village, which may be one of the most fun parts of having Rancharrah as your neighborhood.
It's a walkable collection of local restaurants, cafés, boutiques, and wellness businesses, with lawns and outdoor gathering spaces woven throughout.
Start the morning at Perenn, where fresh breads, pastries, espresso, and brunch make it an easy neighborhood stop. For dinner, Great Gold brings handmade pasta, pizza, and modern Italian cooking to The Village, while Mari Chuy's Tequileria serves Mexican small plates alongside its tequila-focused bar.
There are casual options too. Hinoki Poke works for an easy lunch, Village Well combines pizza with a self-pour taproom and cocktails, and Armando & Sons is part gourmet butcher shop, part neighborhood lunch stop. And when something sweet is calling, there's Rolled Mountain Creamery and locally made chocolates from Dorinda's.
Then there is the wellness side of The Village.
Dolce Vita Wellness & Medical Spa is the kind of place that makes a neighborhood spa day dangerously convenient. The full-service spa offers massages and other treatments along with medical-spa services, relaxation spaces, an outdoor hot tub, and views across the Rancharrah property.
You'll also find Sunday Pilates, along with additional health and wellness businesses throughout The Village.
It turns an ordinary Saturday into something pretty appealing: pastries and coffee in the morning, a Pilates class or spa appointment, a little shopping, and dinner on a patio later that evening.
And because The Village is open to the public, it has its own energy beyond the residential community. Seasonal markets, live music, and community events regularly bring people together on the lawn.
It's not simply something nearby. It's part of what makes living at Rancharrah interesting.
A Very Different Kind of Reno Living
That's ultimately what sets Rancharrah apart.
You have the history of the original Harrah estate, several distinct residential villages, a private social club, and one of Reno's most charming dining and shopping destinations all woven into the same property.
And yet you're still incredibly connected to the rest of the city.
Rancharrah sits in South Reno with convenient access to Midtown, Downtown Reno, shopping, restaurants, and major roadways, while the Sierra and Lake Tahoe are still within reach.
It's a rare combination of privacy and activity. You can retreat home when you want quiet, but coffee, dinner, a workout, a spa afternoon, or an evening event can all be waiting just down the road.
Why Rancharrah Is Worth Exploring
Rancharrah isn't compelling because of one particular amenity.
It's the combination that makes it work.
Beautiful homes. A piece of Reno history. The private Club. Morning coffee at Perenn. Dinner at Great Gold. A treatment at Dolce Vita. Summer concerts on the lawn.
There's always a reason to wander out of the house.
And that might be Rancharrah's biggest luxury of all: having a neighborhood that feels like somewhere you'd actually choose to spend your day.
