Mountain Living in Reno, NV: Why More Homebuyers Are Choosing Life Near the Sierra

When people think of Reno, Nevada, they often picture the Biggest Little City. But ask someone who lives here what they love most, and chances are they'll tell you it has very little to do with downtown.

It's the mountains.

One of my favorite things about living in Reno is how easy it is to enjoy the outdoors without giving up the conveniences of city life. You can start your morning with a hike, spend the afternoon grabbing lunch in town, and still be home in time to watch the sunset over the Sierra Nevada. That balance is one of the biggest reasons so many people are choosing to call Reno, Nevada home.

Whether you're relocating from another state or simply exploring different neighborhoods around Northern Nevada, here's why mountain living has become one of Reno's biggest draws, and why it's worth experiencing for yourself.

What Does "Mountain Living" in Reno Really Mean?

When people hear "mountain living," they often picture remote cabins, long drives to the grocery store, or snowy roads all winter long.

The reality in Reno is quite different.

Many neighborhoods offer mountain views, easy access to hiking and biking trails, and a quieter atmosphere while still being just minutes from restaurants, shopping, healthcare, schools, and major employers. It's one of the reasons Reno continues to attract buyers looking for a lifestyle that's active, scenic, and connected.

For many homeowners, mountain living isn't about being isolated, it's about having nature just outside your front door.

Why Buyers Are Moving to Reno

Over the past several years, Reno has become one of the fastest-growing housing markets in Nevada, and it's easy to see why.

People are drawn here for many reasons:

  • Close proximity to Lake Tahoe
  • Access to hiking, mountain biking, skiing, fishing, and camping
  • Four distinct seasons with plenty of sunshine throughout the year
  • No Nevada state income tax
  • A growing economy and expanding job opportunities
  • A lifestyle that blends outdoor adventure with everyday convenience

Whether you're raising a family, working remotely, or looking for your next chapter, Reno offers something that appeals to a wide variety of homebuyers.

You Don't Have to Choose Between Nature and Convenience

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that if you want mountain views, you have to live far outside the city.

That's simply not true.

Many neighborhoods throughout Reno offer quick access to outdoor recreation while still keeping you close to grocery stores, restaurants, medical care, and everyday amenities. It's one of the things that makes living here so unique.

You can enjoy peaceful surroundings without feeling disconnected from everything you need.

A Great Example: Touring the Timberly Modern Cottage

As part of our Reno New Construction Tour Series, we recently visited the Woodshire Mountain Modern by Toll Brothers.

What stood out to me wasn't just the beautiful finishes or thoughtful floor plan, it was how naturally the home fit into its surroundings.

The large windows captured the natural light. The indoor-outdoor living spaces encouraged you to slow down and enjoy the scenery. The community itself reflects what many buyers are searching for when they picture mountain living in Northern Nevada.

Whether this particular neighborhood is the right fit or not, touring communities like Timberly is a great way to experience the different lifestyles that Reno has to offer.

Is Mountain Living Right for You?

Everyone has a different vision of their perfect home, but mountain living may be a great fit if you:

  • Love hiking, skiing, mountain biking, or spending time outdoors
  • Enjoy quieter neighborhoods with scenic surroundings
  • Want beautiful views without being hours away from city conveniences
  • Appreciate all four seasons
  • Are looking for a lifestyle that encourages getting outside and exploring Northern Nevada

On the other hand, if you prefer living in the heart of a busy downtown, want a highly walkable urban neighborhood, or enjoy being close to nightlife, another area of Reno may be a better fit—and that's okay.

The best neighborhood is the one that fits your lifestyle.

Our goal is to help you explore the different neighborhoods, builders, and lifestyles Northern Nevada has to offer so you can find the one that feels right for you.
